What is an XML summary format?

XML is related to HyperText Markup Language (HTML). It is classified as an extensible language because it allows users to define their own tags. The primary purpose of this export/download format is to enable sharing of structured data across different information systems, particularly via the Internet.

The goal of XML formats is to enable generic SGML to be served, received, and processed on the Internet in a way that is not possible with HTML. XML has been designed for ease of implementation and for interoperability with both SGML and HTML.

However, XML is not just for web pages. It is also used for the following:

  • Information Identification
  • Information Storage
  • Information Structure
  • Publishing
  • Messaging and Data Transportation
  • Web Services

Note: If you need a spreadsheet environment for your data instead, then you should download your data via the CSV (Excel) format option.
